USM Haller 1st vs. 2nd Generation: Identifying the Differences
Around 1990, the 1st generation of the USM Haller design classic was replaced by the 2nd generation of the modular furniture system. This involved several changes, including new components, elements, and functional conversions of the furniture. Reason enough to take a closer look at both generations.

At first glance, the two generations hardly differ. But as is often the case, the devil is in the detail: the biggest challenges you will face - at the latest when planning a redesign or disassembly - will be with the connectors!
While the external elements of both USM Haller generations pose no problems during assembly and disassembly, the connectors of the 1st generation differ significantly from those of the 2nd generation.
1st Generation Connector
- Consists of three elements (1 x screw, 2 x outer clamps/threads)
- Disassembly is only possible with 1st generation tools.
2nd Generation Connector
- Consists of two elements (1 x screw including plastic sleeve, 1 x external thread)
- Assembly and disassembly is possible with a 2nd generation tool set. For example, with our tools.
Once you know which generation your piece of furniture belongs to, everything becomes a bit easier. There is a special tool kit for each generation, which allows you to assemble, disassemble, and reconfigure your modular furniture as desired.

Although the differences are generally minor and one cannot speak of a completely new modular furniture system, there are still clear differences in handling the two generations. Especially the disassembly of 1st generation USM Haller furniture proves to be somewhat more complex. Visually, however, the differences are hardly recognizable even for design specialists. The rest depends on personal preferences and habits.
